THE YEARS 1994 - 2000
Philipp and Johnny
With Johnny Copeland, NYC 1996
The USA years, Harlem, New York, Milford, San Diego.

1994 Philipp Fankhauser follows the invitation of longtime friend Johnny Copeland, and joins him and his "Texas Blues Machine" as featured vocalist. The tour leads through some of America's finest Blues venues, such as Tramps, New York City, Mick Fleetwood's, Washington, D.C, B.B. King's Blues Club, Memphis, Tennessee, Antone's, Austin, Texas, Buddy Guy's Legends, Chicago, Illinois, House of Blues, Boston, Massachusetts, and many others.

1995 Dennis Walker, legendary producer and song writer for Robert Cray, John Campbell, Joe Louis Walker and many others, hears of Philipp Fankhauser and produces his first U.S. album, "On Broadway". The album includes some of L.A.'s finest musicians and the legendary Memphis Horns, Andrew Love and Wayne Jackson. From September on, Philipp Fankhauser makes San Diego his home.

1996 In January Fankhauser visits Europe with the L.A. Band and the Memphis Horns for 15 sold out shows. Swiss Radio International honors the work of Philipp Fankhauser by producing the album "His kind of Blues", a best of  CD including 17 tracks of his previous 5 albums. "His kind of Blues" is released in April of 1996 and is sent to over 1500 radio stations in over 120 countries around the world.

1997 Fankhauser is invited by the Swiss music magazine "Hangar 21" to produce a CD in their "The Story of …" series. "The Story Of Blues" is recorded in March and April of 1997 in Memphis, Chicago, New York City and in Fankhauser's home town Thun, Switzerland. The album includes 12 brand new recordings of legendary Blues songs, available only on this CD, with such high caliber artists as Ruby Wilson, with a fantastic rendition of the southern soul Blues classic "Down Home Blues". It also includes the late great Texas Bluesman Johnny "Clyde" Copeland, offering a fine version of "They Call it Stormy Monday" by his friend and mentor T. Bone Walker. Billy Branch, Chicago's young generation harp wizard, gets down with Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Working". Philipp Fankhauser teams up with Billy Branch and his band in Chicago for a rendition of the Big Bill Broonzy classic "Just a Dream".

April finds Philipp Fankhauser touring Switzerland with the Checkerboard Blues Band, and long time friend Bobby Kyle, singer and guitarist extraordinaire, and long time member of the Johnny Copeland Blues Band. Fankhauser plays a few local shows in San Diego, and Los Angeles, but having a regular day job, time is too little to pursue his music full time.

1998 After the death of his mentor and friend Johnny Copeland in July of 1997, the "Johnny Clyde Tribute Show" hits Europe with a good dozen appearances. The line up includes Johnny's regular touring band, Floyd Phillips on piano, Randy Lippincott on bass,  Bobby Kyle on guitar, and Barry Harrison on drums. The Johnny Copeland Blues Band, nominated as the best Blues Band at the 1994 Handy Awards, shares the stage with Philipp Fankhauser and Johnny's daughter Shemekia Copeland. Shemekia, an accomplished Blues artist in her own right, lands a record deal with Alligator Records later that year, and has ever since won several awards. Later that year, Philipp Fankhauser hits the studio with the Checkerbord Blues Band in Switzerland to record a few tracks to a new album. Additional recordings were made in Nashville, TN, Milford, PA,  and San Diego, CA.

1999  For the first time in 19 years, Philipp Fankhauser has not been appearing on stage at all. He has been working mainly in the studio to finish his seventh album and write new songs.

2000  February sees the release of "Welcome To The Real World" from Philipp Fankhauser with the Checkerboard Blues Band and friends. The seventh album in 10 years. The year 2000 is also the year of return to the roots in Switzerland, and by late 2000 Fankhauser calls Bern, Switzerland his new/old home. After a certain period of re-orientation, he's heading back into music.
